This guide explains how Composerie charges transaction fees on the personalized items you sell. It is for merchants who want to understand what shows up on their bill and why the per-item cost changes from month to month.
What a transaction fee is
A transaction fee is a small charge for each personalized item you sell through Composerie. It is separate from your monthly platform fee. The platform fee keeps your subscription active. The transaction fee covers the personalized items that move through your store.
The fee is usage-based. You pay for what you sell. A slow month costs you less, and a busy month costs more. There is no minimum and no charge for items you do not sell.
Transaction fees do not apply during your free trial. While the trial is active, every personalized item you sell is free. To see how the trial works, read your free trial.
The fee tiers
The per-item rate depends on how many personalized items you sell in a billing period. There are four tiers:
- 1 to 100 items: 1.00 USD per item
- 101 to 1,000 items: 0.50 USD per item
- 1,001 to 10,000 items: 0.25 USD per item
- 10,001 items and up: 0.10 USD per item
The rate is marginal, not a flat rate on every item. Each item is charged at the rate for the band it falls into. Your first 100 items in a period are billed at 1.00 each. Items 101 through 1,000 are billed at 0.50 each, and so on. As your volume grows, more of your items fall into the cheaper bands, so your average cost per item goes down.
Here is a quick example. If you sell 150 personalized items in a period, the first 100 are billed at 1.00 (that is 100.00) and the next 50 are billed at 0.50 (that is 25.00). Your total transaction fee for that period is 125.00, which works out to an average of about 0.83 per item.
You can see the live tier ladder and the band you are currently in on the billing page. Open Settings, then Billing, and find the Usage tiers list. Your current band is marked with a Current badge and highlighted in violet. For a full walk-through of that screen, read the usage dashboard.
How items are counted
A billable item is a personalized item on a paid order. Composerie counts an order line as personalized when it carries a saved design or was resolved through one of your published products. A plain product with no personalization is not billed as a transaction.
The same design with the same personalization on a single order counts once. If a shopper adds the exact same personalized item more than once on one order, you are billed for it a single time, even when it spans several lines. Composerie checks the personalization content to decide this, so identical designs are not double-counted.
Items you sell during your trial stay free. They are not billed, and they do not count against any tier. Billing on personalized items begins when your trial ends and your subscription becomes active.
To see how many of this period’s personalized items are billable, open Settings, then Billing, and look below the usage metric cards for the billable-items detail line. It shows the billable count alongside the total for the period.
Do refunded or cancelled orders still get billed?
Transaction fees apply to paid orders. Check the billable-items detail line on the Billing page to confirm what was counted for the period.
Does adding the same personalized item twice on one order cost double?
No. The same design with the same personalization on a single order is billed once, even across multiple lines.
Am I billed for personalized items I sold during the trial?
No. Items sold during the trial stay free and do not count toward any tier.
If your billable count looks wrong for a period, contact support and we can review the usage with you.
