Design Studio: Messages and What to Do

Most editor messages are one of four situations. Sorted by what you were doing when it appeared, because that is what you remember.

Editor messages tend to arrive at the same four moments. This guide sorts them by what you were doing rather than by their wording, because after you close the notice that is the part you still have.

Four moments

The moment tells you the family. The family tells you the fix.

Downloading the design

The File menu can refuse a format rather than give you a broken file, and the message names the element types it cannot keep. A vector export refuses elements that are not vectors; PDF refuses elements that cannot be captured from the canvas at all.

Both messages end with the same advice, and it is the right one: download PNG instead. See from design to print file for why the production file is a render rather than an export.

Importing has one message worth knowing: a file that is not a valid Composerie design is refused by name, so if you renamed something to end in the right extension, that is why.

Saving a template

A template keeps copies, not references. That is what can fail.

Saving a template archives the fonts and the artwork alongside the layout, so the template still looks right months later when a font has been replaced or an image moved. That archive step is what most template failures are about.

  • A font could not be archived. The message names it. Pick a font from your library, or upload the font file, and save again.
  • Artwork could not be archived. The message names the image. Make sure it is reachable and within the size limit.
  • The page is too large. Remove some artwork and try again.
  • Two layers share an id. Refresh the editor first; that usually clears it. If it does not, save the page as a new template and contact support with the old one.

Opening a preview

Preview needs a saved design, so the first thing to try is saving once. The QR code and the copy-link control have their own fallbacks, and their messages say so: use the link, or open it in a new tab.

If the message says the preview is unavailable because the customizer URL is not configured safely, that is an account-level setting rather than something about this design. Contact support with the product.

Working with variants and materials

A message saying an attribute is no longer in the product config means the product changed after the design was built. Open the product, check its options, and reconnect the design to what is actually there.

The same applies to bundle members and provider products: the editor is showing you that the design is pointing at something the product no longer offers.

Common questions

Why can I not export a vector file?

Some element types are not vectors, so the format cannot keep them. The message lists which ones. Production uses a render rather than an export anyway.

My template saved, but shows a repair notice.

It was saved before its artwork was archived. Repair it from the template picker; orders using it cannot be printed until you do.

The editor says two layers share an id.

Refresh first. If it comes back, save the page as a new template to work from and report the old one.

A change I made is not on my storefront.

That is not an editor error. Publishing is a separate step, and so is your theme. See changes are not showing.

Something failed and I do not have the message any more.

Repeat the action to get it back, then paste the exact wording into support. The precise text is what identifies the cause.
