A Birthday Calendar

The element draws the grid; you do the layout. Put the year in a field and next season is an edit rather than a new product.

A calendar is the recipe where the element does the difficult part. It draws its own grid from a year, so your work is the layout around it and one decision about how long the product stays sellable.

Build it

The grid draws itself. Everything that can go wrong is the space around it.

Place the calendar and set the year

Add the Calendar element and set the year and the first day of the week for your market. The grid follows.

Leave a margin

A wall calendar needs somewhere to be punched, hung or trimmed. Design the space in rather than discovering it on the first print.

Add the personal line

A name, a family, a dedication. One short text field above or below the grid is what turns a calendar into a gift.

Decide what the shopper sets

Usually the personal line and the year. Leave the layout, the colours and the typography to you.

Check the six-row month

Some months need six rows rather than five. Set the calendar to one of those and make sure your layout still works, because that is the version that breaks a tight design.

Three things to settle

A calendar expires. Build it so next year is an edit.

One page or twelve

A single-page year calendar is one surface and one file, and it is by far the easier product to sell and to fulfil. A month-per-page calendar is twelve surfaces, twelve designs and twelve sets of files, and every one of them has to be right.

Start with the single page. See manage a product’s sides if you decide to grow it later.

Common questions

Can the shopper mark their own dates?

The element draws the grid rather than a list of events. A personal line above the grid is the usual way to make it theirs.

My layout breaks on some months.

Those are the months that need a sixth row. Design against one of those and the rest have room to spare.

Which day should the week start on?

Whichever your market expects. It is a setting on the element, so it is worth getting right rather than assuming.

Do I need a new product every year?

Not if the year is a field. Then it is an edit, and existing orders keep the year they were bought with.

Twelve pages means twelve files?

Yes, one set per surface. That is the main reason to start with a single page.
